With the publication of the Hipparcos data, it's possible to create realistic star scenes around stars so far away from the Sun that they're inconspicuous (or even invisible) without a telescope. Before I wrote the online Distant Worlds Star Mapper, I used the rendering program POV-Ray to create star fields that I could then use as backgrounds for famous stars and planetary systems. A few of these images are listed below. |
